I can remember having a little Mickey Mouse flip-book when I was 5. You flicked quickly through the pages for a little 15 second silent cartoon. It was the ultimate in scientific discovery for me who just presumed, logically, that he was a real mouse.

So maybe a 20 year step back in time is one major step forward for company Flip Clips who produce these books with your home videos. Go to them with a video of your bridal waltz and they transpose it into a flip-book for you to hand out
to friends and family. A delightfully retro alternative to the Quick Time email video you may have otherwise sent around at 4MB a piece at the risk of crashing Aunt Sophie's IBM from yesteryear. Furthermore, the corporate world can present their latest products to clients in a larger format flip-book, the newest alternative to PowerPoint.

Customer-made ads

This type of advertising has been coming in stages for years. Locally, the most current example that jumps to mind are the Virgin Mobile ads that feature 'fake but oh-so-real' customers discussing their life, their work and their $49 cap; specifically dorky characters, a far cry from the sub-Hollywood culture of commercial actors.

But following up on this stage of pseudo customer-made ads, Virgin brought us the YOUR AD campaign. Customers were given 10 days in which to visit the website or call the YOUR AD line and select the ad, its settings, co-stars, costumes and soundtrack. This move came just three weeks after appointing a new Brand Manager and adopted a highly interactive form of branding that reached out to its audience - namely bright, young 20-somethings - and asked for their input. Genius from Virgin if they want their ad watched; whether a customer's idea was used or not, they would stay tuned just to make sure and hence, Virgin's ad campaign visibility would be heightened.

But this semi-new breed of advertising in the form of co-creation with customers has resulted in the launch of an American ad agency based in Atlanta called ViTrue who specialise in targeted marketing of this kind. Launching their first customer-made ad in partnership with Moe's Southwest Grill, the creative brief was simple: "Moe's Burrito in every hand." Customers were given the opportunity to submit their ideas and these ranged from home productions of a Hells Angel tearing it up with his trusty burrito in hand to this clever little animated ad - http://moes.sharkle.com/video/874/ Submissions will be uploaded onto the website to be judged by Moe's customers, the Sharkle community and a panel of Moe's representatives. But the best bit? The winner will receive a one free burrito every week for their rest of their life.

In the tradition of reality TV, not only are average people the stars of mainstream TV, we are now the producers of our own ads aimed at selling a product to ourselves. Engaging your audience was never easier. Or cheaper, for that matter. I'm sure a life supply of burritos costs a lot less than the average studio hire...

A recruitment ad in B&T magazine this week put a smile on my dial.

I WOULDN’T DO THIS JOB IF YOU PAID ME

Being an Account Director at George Patterson Y&R Melbourne, means working at the pinnacle of Australian advertising. You’ll be expected to have the strength of character to constantly fight for great work (and never give up). To be blessed with razor sharp presentation skills. To be capable of putting in unforgivable hours and of course, to never be afraid to stand up for what you believe.

I on the other hand, as your basic garden variety advertising creative, am only really good at having discussions about the pros and cons of eighties rock supergroups such as Bon Jovi and Europe; or why making the movie “Superman Returns” was a mistake of the highest order (despite superior special effects) and perhaps whether or not a cardboard cut-out can really count as a sex doll.

So frankly, to me your job sounds bloody impossible.

Anyone in the sneaker game knows that there's no shortage of shoes that take design elements from cars; adidas kobe 2s based on the audi tt, air jordan 14s based on michael's own ferrari and lebron's hummer inspired jbjs.

Sneaker design and shoe design often run along similar curves too. futuristic looking cars on the road lead to futuristic looking athletic shoes on our feet (late 90's gave us new school, sleek looking cars, and lots of shiny space age looking shoes eg nike's all silver/gold air max '97s). Early 2000s gave us remakes of the mini cooper, the bug and the pt cruiser to name just a few, at the same time as global sporting giants (nike, adidas, reebok et al) ransacked their back catalogues and gave us colour way after colour way of remakes from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The logic here was simple. people (read: guys) wanted these shoes as kids but had no loot to buy them. now that they're working and have cash to splash, lets let them revisit a happy place in their childhood for the one time, low low price of about $200.

So here's what i'm asking, and you can call me crazy. is it conceivable that people who are now in their fifties would shell out cash for a brand new, 25 year old porsche?

here's the rationale. these guys started working in their 20s and no doubt had their sites set on one day owning the best of the best. now that they're disposable income is porsche sized, is it such a stretch to think that a 1981 shell, filled with 2006's finest interior and safety features would tickle their fancy?

it's letting them go back to that happy place and own that porsche that they always wanted without compromising on the safety or creature comforts you'd expect when you spend over $150k on a car

for the car companies its a great outcome too - do you know how expensive it must be to constantly come up with new designs? the sneaker industry is laughing all the way to the bank flogging off designs that already payed for themselves back in 1979!

so c'mon, who wants one?

So we’ve all hear stories about the stuff you get asked to do when you’re new to the job. “Make the new kid get the coffee” or “Send the new kid up to the haunted attic for stationery”. Well, it may be commonplace and we just don’t know it, but Adcorp recently asked two of their young employees to take part in photo shoots for clients who, for whatever reason, didn’t want to use ‘models’. Look out for Amy (AKA Angry Amy) the Copywriter in upcoming Bic brochures and Dave (AKA Drag Queen Dave) the Graphic Designer in Borders promotional material. Who knew Dave looked so good in lipstick?

Should Dell Blog?

Yesterday Dell launched a new blog, One2One, and have already received quite a lot of flack from other bloggers.

Journalist & Blogger, Jeff Jarvis has scolded the company on his blog, as did Steve Ruble on his.

I'm more inclined to side with Scoble on this - give them time to set it up, blogs are organic - they can't be perfect on day one.
